      Saguenay Hiking

“In English, Saguenay means Quintessential Québec”

Quebec celebrates itself as a patchwork of regions. While these may vary, many would say the quintessential essence of Québec is best found in the Saguenay region. This tour is a loop, beginning and ending in the cultural and political heart of the province, Québec City. In between, we will explore the historic forestry region of Lac St. Jean, the spectacular fjords of the Saguenay River, the whale watching capital, Tadoussac, and the mountainous north shore of the mighty St. Lawrence River.

        Challenging Hikes on Mountain Trails

This tour includes a variety of scenic hikes through the boreal forests of Québec. In fact, this is a tour-de-force of many of the greatest hikes found in Québec’s National Parks – Jacques Cartier; Saguenay Fjord; Monts-Valin; and Hautes Gorge.

        Québec City

Before we head off into the forest, we will spend a night in splendid Québec City. Our hotel is a perfect base for exploring 400+ years of history in the Old City, and we will enjoy two walking tours led by professional local guides.

        Whale Watching in Tadoussac

No trip to the Saguenay region would be complete without a boat trip to see the whales. See these magnificent creatures up close, against the backdrop of the North Shore mountains.

        La Pulperie de Chicoutimi

Lodge within the former mill of the Compagnie de pulpe de Chicoutimi, and visit La Pulperie de Chicoutimi, a museum dedicated to the arts and culture of the Saguenay region. Walk along the interpretive pathways to scenic lookouts, visit the historical buildings, and learn all about the pulping process.

        Canyon Ste Anne

Guests will have free time to discover the spectacular canyon dug into the 1.2 billion-year-old rock by a fall of 74m, its mini canyon, and its giant pothole.  Trails include crossing three suspension bridges, one standing at 60 m in the air, to obtain breathtaking views from many angles.  The adventurous may wish to experience  the AirCanyon ride over the gorge!

        Unforgettable Québecois Cuisine

For some reason, Quebecers seem to care more about food than most other Canadians. This is evident in the multitude of fine-dining establishments found throughout the province, but it also shows up in simple foods in everyday places. (Even the hot dogs taste better here!) • Accommodations

        *9 day tour only

        Hôtel Tadoussac

Located at the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord in one of the most beautiful bays in the world, the Hôtel Tadoussac with its whitewashed walls, red roof, dormer windows and cupola, is a striking landmark from a bygone era. There is a rich food supply where the waters of the Saguenay and the St. Lawrence rivers mix and mingle, so just steps from Hôtel Tadoussac is a prime location to spot several species of whales who come to feast on the abundant krill and capelin.

      • Important Info for this Hike

Within the DeLuxe Hiking portfolio of tours, Saguenay Hiking is one of our more challenging offerings, as even the walking tours in Québec City involve lots of hills, and most hikes are on narrow paths with significant undulations and irregular footing. The most challenging hike is up to the statue, Our Lady of Saguenay (H3/Difficult).  The trails in Jacques Cartier National Park and Hautes Gorges National Park are both long and at the upper end of the H2/Moderate category. Proper hiking boots and poles are recommended.

This itinerary includes a boat cruise.  Although for most people medication is not required, there may be some who may want to bring along a remedy for motion sickness.  You don’t want to let a little thing like that spoil this amazing experience.

      • Optional Add-Ons

This tour starts and ends in Québec City, so guests can join this tour from anywhere in the world! Some guests may want to consider arriving a day or two early, or stay a little longer to spend some extra time exploring this beautiful city. Our staff can assist with booking additional nights at the hotel and arranging flights for an additional fee. (See optional add-ons.)

Taking the motorcoach from Toronto is an option. Ask about adding on our Connections Program to help you get to the pickup point.

On Day 3, for the hikers who are truly adventurous, ask about the Via Ferrata.  The latest rage for adrenaline enthusiasts is tackling a “via ferrata” climbing/rappelling course along a breathtaking sheer mountainside. While this is an optional, à-la-carte experience, and not for the faint-hearted, it will provide memorable moments for those who are brave enough to try it!

On Day 8, while at Canyon St. Anne, there is an option to fly through the air on the AirCanyon. Enjoy a 400m ride on a motorized chair, “flying” 50 km/h through the forest and 90m above the abyss, with amazing views of the canyon … truly breathtaking!
